GHS Category - Serious Eye Damage Eye Irritation

GHS Definition:

Serious ocular damage is ocular tissue damage, or severe physiological visual impairment, which is not fully reversible within 21 days of application, following application of a test substance to the anterior surface of the eyeball. Eye irritation was an ocular change following application of the test substance to the anterior surface of the eye, but was fully reversible within 21 days of application.

The mean of , at least two of the three test animals showed positive reactions:

(i) Corneal opacity ≥ 3; and/or

(ii) iritis > 1.5.

Category 2/2A

Average calculated from grading at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours after the instillation of the test substance

Score, at least two of the three test animals showed positive reactions:

(a) Corneal opacity ≥ 1; and/or

(b) iritis ≥ 1; and/or

(c) Conjunctival hyperemia ≥ 2; and/or

(d) Conjunctival edema (conjunctival edema) ≥ 2

But it was fully reversible within the usual 21-day observation period.

Category 2B

In subcategory 2A, eye irritation if the effects listed above are fully reversible within a 7-day observation period

is considered a minor eye irritant (category 2B).
