Posted Date:2016/6/9 8

Fire-fighting measures the 5th section of an SDS per GHS covers the extinguishing requirements. The fire may be caused by material or mixture. Or fire occurs around the material or mixture.

1. Suitable extinguishing media

Provide the information of suitable extinguishing media. Besides, it should state that certain extinguishing media can not be applied to this material or mixture under some specific conditions, such as avoiding using the high pressure media which may cause an explosive duct-air mixture.

(a)Suitable extinguishing agent: indicate the applicable extinguishing agent by using concise language. Choosing suitable extinguishing agent can refer to relevant professional books and regulations.

Example 1: using foam, CO2 and dry powder to put out a fire

(b) Unsuitable extinguishing agent: indicate the inapplicable extinguishing agent. The extinguishing agent may be with the material on fire in chemical reactions, or occur a physical change sharply to cause other hazard, such as some material in contact with water emit flammable or toxic gases. It’s better to indicate the inapplicable reasons.

Example 2: extinguishing with water is invalid

Example 3: avoid to using direct water to put out the fire, because the direct water may lead to the flammable liquid splash and spread the fire.

2. Specific hazards arising from the chemical

Provide relevant information of specific hazards arising from the chemical, such as hazardous combustion products which is formed when material or mixture burning. For example:

(a) burning may occur toxic smoke of CO; or

(b) burning occurs sulfur and oxides of nitrogen

3. Special protective equipment and precautions for fire-fighters

Provide all relevant information of protective action which is adopted when put out the fire. For example, keep the container cool by spraying water.

The information provided by this item should contain:

(a)The protective action is adopted in the process of extinguishing, for example, isolate the site of the accident and prohibit irrelevant person to enter; when the fire-fighters put out the fire, they should stand on the opposite direction of the wind blowing; keep the container cool by spraying water.

(b)The fire-fighter should wear personal protective equipment which covers fire-fighting shoes, fire-fighting suit, fire-fighting gloves, fire-fighting helmet and respiratory protective equipment like respirator with gas.

(c)When fill out this item, it should indicate the possibility of pollution caused by leakage and fire-fighting water to the source of water and land, as well as the measures to reduce pollution of environment and so on.
