Common Toxic Gas - Carbon Monoxide

Posted Date:2022/11/16

In general, carbon monoxide comes mostly from burning fuels like coal and oil. Some natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions, forest fires, mine explosions and earthquakes, can also lead to the production of carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly toxic pollutant to the blood and nervous system. When the carbon monoxide concentration in the air reaches 10ppm, after 10 minutes, the carbon oxyhemoglobin (COHb) level in the human blood can reach more than 2%, which can cause nervous system reactions, such as slowness of movement and confusion.

Hazards of carbon monoxide (CAS: 630-08-0) :

Hazards of carbon monoxide:

Hazard Assessment in China Hazardous Chemicals List - Hazardous Chemicals Classification Information Table:

H220: Extremely flammable gas.

H280: internal high pressure gas; May explode in heat.

H301: Poisoning if swallowed.

H360: May cause harm to fertility or the fetus.

H372: Long-term or repeated exposure can cause organ damage.

Emergency response measures:

Therapeutic principles

1. When using gas appliances, if there are symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, palpitation and limb weakness, you should stop using them immediately, open doors and Windows for ventilation as soon as possible, seek medical treatment as soon as possible, and contact gas appliance manufacturers or gas supply companies for maintenance.

2. Find others poisoned, because carbon monoxide is lighter than air, rescuers should cover their mouth with wet towels, fall down into the room, turn off the gas, can not appear open fire, do not switch electrical appliances. Quickly lift victim to ventilation, release collar, keep breathing, and call 120 first aid.

3. While waiting for first aid, patients should have a quiet rest, avoid aggravating the burden of heart and lung and increasing oxygen consumption after activities, and keep warm.

4. If the victim's breathing and heartbeat stop, artificial respiration and cardiac compression should be carried out immediately.
