SDS Part 8 - Selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Posted Date:2024/9/24

The 8 part of GHS is: Exposure control and Personal Protection, the following is mainly about the choice of personal protective equipment. As we all know, the purpose of the GHS system is to protect human health and the environment, improve the existing classification and labeling system of chemicals, and reduce the testing and evaluation of chemicals. Then "protective equipment" is particularly important when handling chemicals, because the right protective equipment can minimize the possibility of illness or injury due to contact with substances or mixtures.

UN GHS requirements

(a) Protective blindfolds/masks: Specify the type of protective blindfolds and/or masks required, depending on the danger and potential for contact of the substance or mixture;

(b) Skin protection: Specify the protective equipment (e.g. type of gloves, boots, tights) that must be worn, depending on the danger and likelihood of contact of the substance or mixture;

(c) Respiratory protection: Specify the appropriate type of respiratory protection, depending on the risk and likelihood of exposure, including gas masks for purifying the air and appropriate purification elements (filters or cartridges), or respiratory devices; and

(d) High temperature hazards: When specifying the protective equipment that must be worn against materials with high temperature hazards, special consideration should be given to the construction of personal protective equipment.

There may be special requirements for gloves or other protective clothing to protect against skin, eye or lung contact. Where relevant, such personal protective equipment should be clearly stated. For example, "polyvinyl chloride gloves" or "nitrile rubber gloves", as well as the thickness of the glove material and the time of breakage. There may also be special requirements for respirators.

Each country has a national reference standard for protective equipment, which can be referred to in China: GB 39800 series standard, which gives very professional opinions on the selection of protective equipment for different workplaces.

Taking into account the actual use of the product and other factors related to the product, the target group of the SDS (SDS guidance documents are used for the entire product production cycle, from raw materials - intermediates - finished products - transportation - use, etc., may be production workers, may also be users or consumers), Therefore, personal protective equipment needs to be selected according to the characteristics of the manufacturer's own products. When we make SDS, we can only write according to the requirements within the scope of the GHS rules, due to the special circumstances that may exist, and under the premise of SDS as a guidance document, almost all protective equipment will be listed as a precaution.
