Special packaging requirements for Class A infectious substances

Posted Date:2024/11/1

Special packaging requirements for Category A infectious substances (Item 6.2, UN 2814 and UN 2900).

The shipper of infectious substances shall ensure that the packages prepared by him are in good condition when they arrive at their destination and do not pose a danger to humans or animals during transport.

The general packaging regulations apply to packages of infectious substances. However, liquids can only be packed in packages that have an appropriate tolerance for the internal pressures that may arise under normal transport conditions.
An itemized list of contents should be placed between the auxiliary packaging and the outer packaging. When the infectious substance being transported is not known but is suspected to meet the criteria for inclusion in category A, it should be marked "suspected infectious substance in category A" in brackets after the official name of the transport document and placed in the outer package.

Before returning empty packages to the consignor or sending them elsewhere, they shall be sterilized or disinfected to eliminate all hazards, and all labels or markings indicating that the packages have contained infectious substances shall be removed or painted.

The main receptacle in the secondary package, if it maintains the same level of performance, allows the following changes without the need for further testing of the entire package:
1.A main reservoir of equal or smaller size than the tested main reservoir may be used if:
(1) The main reservoir is of a similar design to the tested main reservoir (e.g. shape: round, rectangular, etc.);
(2) The material (glass, plastic, metal, etc.) from which the main reservoir is made can withstand a material equal to or greater than the main reservoir originally tested
The impact force and pile pressure of the device;
(3) The main reservoir has the same or smaller opening and a similar design of the closing device (such as screw cap, friction cover, etc.);
(4) Use sufficient additional liner material to fill the gaps and prevent the main reservoir from moving significantly;
(5) The orientation of the main reservoir in the auxiliary package is the same as that in the tested package;
2.A smaller number of tested main receptacles or other main receptacles as described in (a) above may be used, provided that sufficient padding material is added to fill gaps and prevent significant movement of the main receptacles.
