GHS and Pesticides
Posted Date:2022/12/2
It is widely expected that pesticides will adopt the Global Uniform Classification and Labelling System for Chemicals (GHS). The biggest impact of GHS on pesticides will be on pesticide classification and product labelling. Although many countries have adopted GHS for industrial chemicals in the workplace, many countries still follow the FAO Pesticide Registration Guidelines and FAO Pesticide Labelling Specification Guidelines (rather than GHS) for pesticide hazard classification and preparation of pesticide labels. In this paper, we analyze the current status of GHS adoption in the pesticide industry in various countries.
GHS is used for pesticides in Australia
▪ GHS for pesticides.
▪ When applying for registration approval, GHS hazard classification and safety data sheets are required in the Part 6 packet.
The GHS system is used for insecticides in the United States
▪ GHS has not been adopted for pesticides.
▪ is considering GHS for pesticide use.
China has not adopted a uniform global system for pesticides
▪ GHS has not been adopted for pesticides.
▪ Pesticides do not require GHS labeling standards.
▪ is revising its guidelines for the preparation of pesticide SDS consistent with GHS.
GHS is used in Japanese insecticides
▪ GHS has not been adopted for pesticides.
▪ Still follows the old pesticide classification and labeling requirements.
In Korea, GHS is used for insecticides
▪ GHS has not been adopted for pesticides.
At present, GHS is a global epidemic, and the United Nations has promoted the unified rules for labeling hazardous substances, while pesticides are basically hazardous substances. In the future, it is only a matter of time before the unified GHS system is adopted in the field of pesticides. Perhaps at that time its requirements will be more rigorous in the original national pesticide related standards, compared with ordinary harmful chemicals.
