Introduction to IMDG Code
Posted Date:2022/12/9
The International Maritime Dangerous Goods code (IMDG code) is an internationally recognized regulation developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that sets out provisions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by sea. The objective of the IMDG rules is to enhance the safe transport of dangerous goods by sea and to protect the Marine environment. If your products are classified as dangerous goods and you want to transport them by sea, you must comply with the provisions in the IMDG rules. In this article, we'll give you an overview of the IMDG code.
How to learn IMDG code
The provisions in the IMDG rules are based on the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (known as the "Standard Provisions"), which provide a regulatory framework for the safe transport of dangerous goods by various means, including air, road, rail and sea. It is recommended that you read the Model United Nations Regulations before reading the IMDG Rules.
The United Nations Model Regulations detail general principles for classification of dangerous goods, labelling, marking, slogans, documentation and lists of dangerous goods. These principles and requirements apply to all modes of transport of dangerous goods (i.e., ADR, IATA).
Structure of IMDG code
The Code's main content is basically consistent with the Recommendations - Model Regulations of the United Nations. It consists of the following three sections (7 parts, 2 appendices and supplements).
Content of Volume 1: Part 1: General Provisions, definitions and training; Part 2: Classification; Part 4: Packaging and container provisions; Part 5: Consignment procedures; Part 6: Construction and testing of packaging, medium bulk containers, bulk packaging, removable tank tanks, multi-cell gas containers and highway tankers; Part 7: Relevant provisions for transport operations.
Contents of Volume 2: Part 3: List of dangerous goods and exemptions within Limits; Appendix A- List of correct shipping names in general and not otherwise listed entries; Appendix B- Glossary of Terms; English Index of Dangerous Goods; Chinese Index of Dangerous Goods;
Volume 3 is a supplementary edition.
The IMDG code is updated every two years to be consistent with the United Nations Model Regulations. For example, if the dangerous goods list is updated in the UN model regulations, then the dangerous goods list in the IMDG code will also be updated.
